I never realized how patriotic I was until I spent Independence Day in another country. To my shock, July 4th in Russia came without fireworks, hot dogs on a campfire, or any hint of watermelon! We had to decide—did we celebrate our freedom anyway, on our own?
We lived in the middle of a county just experiencing the first taste of freedom from oppression,
I’ve been travelling a lot this spring in between writing Duchess, my final Daughters of Fortune book for Summerside/Guideposts. Duchess is about a starlet in the Golden Era of the Silver Screen, the 1930s, and I’ve been furiously researching everything from MGM, Warner Brothers, Irving Thalberg, Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow, Clark Gable and generally all things iconic Hollywood.
My daughter is a junior in high school, so we’ve begun the college search. Although I’ve been on the road for a few weeks, to such places as Sioux Falls, SD, Fargo, ND, Fosston, MN, and even Monroe, Louisiana – I squeezed in a quick trip to Chicago to visit North Park University.
We went there because my daughter loves schools with columns.

AKA, Dinner out with my hubby for Valentine’s Day. It’s a little frightening, I know, when I’m enthralled with a piece of cake, but this was simply gorgeous (and tasty too).
