Adam by Ted Dekker

My esteemed son has written a review for Ted Dekker’s latest release!Adam

Without further ado…

“Don’t read this book at night!”

This is my recommendation for everyone reading Ted Dekker’s Adam. A psychological thriller, Adam finds its strength from the fear rooted in the reader’s soul. Sitting in my lazy boy, the harsh realities of this book shocked my soul out of its quiet complacency.  In  Adam, as we follow the pursuit of a serial killer, his prey, and the bindings in his soul; we are pulled down into a world of fear and possibilities. Adam, brings out the worst of the human spirit, and brings into focus the saving grace of God that has so punctuated his previous books.

A definite fan of Ted Dekker’s I love his books because they are thought-provoking and deep, and he puts his characters in unique situations that make his books stand out above the rest.  Having had the privilege of meeting the author I can tell you that he writes from a place of purpose, and a place of hope, for without it this book wouldn’t be a thriller, but a horror novel. Dekker, in Adam, shows us a world of possibilities, for good or evil.  Adam will remind each of us that actions have consequences and that in our world, the world of natural and supernatural realities, we must guard ourselves against the ignorances that could destroy us.

Adam, another brilliant thriller from my favorite author.

David Warren, (avid reader and son of Susan May Warren)

About Ted: Ted is the son of missionaries John and Helen Dekker, whose incredible story of life among headhunters in Indonesia has been told in several books. Surrounded by the vivid colors of the jungle and a myriad of cultures, each steeped in their own interpretation of life and faith, Dekker received a first-class education on human nature and behavior. This, he believes, is the foundation of his writing.

After graduating from a multi-cultural high school, he took up permanent residence in the United States to study Religion and Philosophy. After earning his Bachelor’s Degree, Dekker entered the corporate world in management for a large healthcare company in California. Dekker was quickly recognized as a talent in the field of marketing and was soon promoted to Director of Marketing. This experience gave him a background which enabled him to eventually form his own company and steadily climb the corporate ladder.

Since 1997, Dekker has written full-time. He states that each time he writes, he finds his understanding of life and love just a little clearer and his expression of that understanding a little more vivid. Dekker’s body of work encompassing seven mysteries, three thrillers and ten fantasies includes Heaven’s Wager, When Heaven Weeps, Thunder of Heaven, Blessed Child, A Man Called Blessed, Blink, Thr3e, The Circle Trilogy (Black, Red, White), and Obsessed, with two more…Renegade, and Chaos to be released later this year.

About the Book:

He died once to stop the killer…now he’s dying again to save his wife.

FBI behavioral psychologist Daniel Clark has become famous for his well-articulated arguments that religion is one of society’s greatest antagonists. What Daniel doesn’t know is that his obsessive pursuit of a serial killer known only as “Eve” is about to end abruptly with an unexpected death-his own.

Twenty minutes later Daniel is resuscitated, only to be haunted by the loss of memory of the events immediately preceding his death.

Daniel becomes convinced that the only way to stop Eve is to recover those missing minutes during which he alone saw the killer’s face. And the only way to access them is to trigger his brain’s memory dump that occurs at the time of death by simulating his death again…and again. So begins a carefully researched psychological thriller which delves deep into the haunting realities of near-death experiences, demon possession, and the human psche.

"As always with a Ted Dekker thriller, the details of ADAM are stunning, pointing to meticulous research in a raft of areas: police and FBI methods, forensic medicine, psychological profiling-in short, all that accompanies a Federal hunt for a serial killer. But Dekker fully reveals his magic in the latter part of the book, when he subtly introduces his darker and more frightening theme. It’s all too creepily convincing. We have to keep telling ourselves that this is fiction. At the same time, we can’t help thinking that not only could it happen, but that it will happen if we’re not careful."

Symphany of Secrets by Sharon Hinck

Symphony of Secrets…a new novel by Sharon Hinck (Bethany House Publishers)

SymphonyofsecretsAbout the book:
Talented flutist Amy Johnson’s dreams come true when she wins a spot with the Minneapolis Symphony. But this amateur sleuth has trouble concentrating on the notes as she begins to see devious motives behind her fellow musicians’ many mishaps. Meanwhile, her musically talented daughter wants to give it all up for—gasp—the cheerleading squad! What’s a musical mom to do? Can Amy fine-tune her investigation before the symphony is forced to close and she loses not only her dream job but her promising new relationship with its conductor?

Author Q&ASharonhinckpk

What is the significance of the title, Symphony of Secrets?
On an obvious level, Amy tries to uncover answers to the mystery of who is ruining the symphony, and the secrets of her various “suspects”. But a key element of the story is that Amy has been keeping family secrets for many years and is finally forced to face them. There is also a growing awareness of the “secret” (hitherto unknown by her) work of God, which plays out in her life like the movements of a symphony. Her life is really a symphony of secrets.

Why did you decide to add a mystery to the mix for this book?
I’ve always loved Dorothy Gillman’s “Mrs. Pollifax” books (a retired garden-club woman joins the CIA) and Jill Churchill’s “Jane Jeffrey” novels (a suburban mom solves murders) so I thought it would be fun to make Amy a bit of an armchair detective (at least in her own mind). It made for a fun combination.

Your Becky Miller books took us into the world of a mom with big dreams. How does Amy differ from Becky?
I love exploring the heroic in people the world considers “ordinary” – like moms. Like the Becky Miller books, Symphony of Secrets includes a strong story thread about parenting, but the dynamics of a young single mom with a teen daughter are an interesting new twist. Their banter has a bit of a Gilmore Girl vibe to it – full of affection but a little dysfunctional – which adds to the fun.

Is there a love interest for Amy?
I hadn’t planned for one when I began the book, but a certain character walked into a scene, tossed some musical scores on a table, put his feet up, and was so dynamic, I fell in love with him. So Amy did, too. The story isn’t primarily a romance, but in between trying to raise her daughter, hide family secrets, and save the symphony, Amy is further befuddled by the romantic feelings she works hard to ignore.

Are you at all like Amy?
My editor told me that of all my characters, she sees a lot of me in this one. That cracked me up because as I shaped Amy, I made her cranky, with little people skills, and hapless in her crime-fighting efforts. But I have to admit, my editor is right. There are some similarities.

Although I’m not a professional concert musician, as a writer, I’m familiar with the neurotic-artist tendencies that were so fun to develop in Amy. I share with her the passionate desire to create something of beauty, the massive insecurities, and the bulldog determination to pursue what matters.

What is the main spiritual theme of Symphony of Secrets?
God loves us enough to come and meet us through the avenues that we understand. He finds ways to speak our language. I’ve seen many examples of God wooing someone toward Himself through that person’s passions. Amy understands the world of music and God coaxes her to consider spiritual issues through the beauty of music that is already alive in her heart.

Endorsements:

“It’s official—if the book says Sharon Hinck on the spine, I’m buying it! Symphony of Secrets hits just the right tone, weaving harmonies of mystery, family, and the life of a symphonic musician—a topic I’ve not experienced in fiction before. The melody is God’s love, subtle yet persistent and so perfectly pitched that I’ll be humming that tune for a long time to come. This is a great read and a perfect gift for anyone who finds joy in music.” — Kathryn Mackel, Vanished

"What a delightful story! I fell in love with the characters on the first page and didn’t want to let them go. If you love music, as I do, you’ll especially enjoy this engaging tale of lost dreams and second chances. Like a Haydn serenade, your mind will dance along the story line at an engaging pace, allowing your imagination and sense of humor to absorb the melody of its plot. With Symphony of Secrets, Sharon Hinck makes beautiful music with her words!" — Mindy Starns Clark, The Million Dollar Mysteries series."

The Sovereign’s Daughter

What would you do if you were given a sacred quest — by the king himself, and that quest turned out to be to save the life of the most wanted woman in all the kingdom?  Add to that, what if your religion said that you weren’t to lift arms? Your only weapon being your faith in God’s protection?

And what if your father told you to leave the castle, possibly forever, and placed your security in a man who looked like he just wanted to run, far and fast, away from you?

Enter Anton Klassen and Oksana Romanova, the heiress to the Russian throne.  But in a country torn by war, will she be a casualty?  What price will she have to pay to save the family line?

The Sovereign’s Daughter written with with Susan Downs, a fellow fan of Russia, as the last of our four part series, the Heirs of Anton.  But it’s really the first story, the beginning of the epic adventure, and it’s been repackaged and given new life.  If you’re a fan of historical adventure, and Russian history, pick up The Sovereign’s Daughter, hitting the shelves sometime this month!

What did you want the reader to take away from your story?

Susan D: No matter how dark and desperate life may seem at any given moment, God is in control. For this series, we chose an overriding scriptural theme of God’s faithfulness based on the verse in Psalm 100: 5 (NIV), which says, "For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations."

Susan W:  That God has plan bigger than what we see, and frankly, we might never know the end, but we can trust that it is good.

What is the hardest thing about writing as part of a team?

Susan D: I think the hardest part of writing as a team for me had to be the fear that my work would be a disappointment to my partner. If it was, Susie never said so. That in itself earns her a lifetime supply of Brownie points!

Susan W:  I think that Susan and I have a very unique writing partnership – we collaborate on the plots, and they are stronger for our ideas twined together, plus we have a deep friendship.  We’ve found that it works best to have one writer slap down the rough draft, and the other polish it.  It’s a great way to create a piece that has more body and texture to it.

Is this book a standalone or part of a series? If series, what are the other books in the series?

This book was originally part of a 4-book series, a reverse generational saga that started in the contemporary and spiraled back to the past.  Although each book stood alone, a mystery thread wound through the stories to connect them.  And, of course, they’re all connected through their family lineage—as the “Heirs of Anton” series.  After The Sovereign’s Daughter (originally named Oksana), comes

Marina

, (set in WW2), then Nadia (set in the cold war) and finally Ekaterina (set in contemporary

Russia

).  We picked time periods that we loved to write about – I especially love WW2 and spy novels, so I loved writing about these unsung heroines.

Awaken My Heart by DiAnn Mills

Feb 11th 2008
Posted by Susan

My…a good book and a night away! What could be better? For the release of DiAnn’s Mill’s latest book, Awaken My Heart, DiAnn has teamed up with her publisher, Avon Inspire for a fabulous Valentine’s Day contest! Details here!

About the book: Awaken_my_heartsmall_2

1803, The Colony of Texas

Journey back to the early days of southwest history  when the Spanish ruled the vast territory of Texas and padres instructed the  people in the ways of God. Step into the world of handsome vaqueros and brightly dressed dark-eyed maidens.

The time is 1803. This is the era of Marianne Phillips and Armando Garcia, two people separated by race and culture but destined for love. Marianne is the daughter of a wealthy American rancher, a man who will do anything to please the Spanish and secure his land. Armando is a Mexican peasant, a rebel according to the Spanish. He has committed his life to helping the poor rise from poverty and the oppression of the ruling Spanish. Armando and Marianne . . . Two unlikely people who have little in common. Or do they?

Open this book to a romance that will live in your heart long after the story is told. Curl up in a serape and listen to the strum of a Spanish guitar. I invite you to read with your heart and become a part of a love story that only the hand of God could orchestrate.

About the author:Diannmillsbrownsweater_2

Award-winning author, DiAnn Mills, launched her career in 1998 with the publication of her first book. Currently she has over forty books in print and has sold more than a million copies.

DiAnn believes her readers should “Expect an Adventure.” Her desire is to show characters solving real problems of today from a Christian perspective through a compelling story.

Six of her anthologies have appeared on the CBA Best Seller List. Three of her books have won the distinction of Best Historical of the Year by Heartsong Presents. Five of her books have won placements through American Christian Fiction Writer’s Book of the Year Awards 2003 – 2007. She is the recipient of the Inspirational Reader’s Choice award for 2005 and 2007.

DiAnn is a founding board member for American Christian Fiction Writers, a member of Inspirational Writers Alive, Romance Writers of America’s Faith, Hope and Love, and Advanced Writers and Speakers Association. She speaks to various groups and teaches writing workshops around the country. DiAnn is also a mentor for Jerry B. Jenkins Christian Writer’s Guild. About the author: She lives in sunny Houston, Texas, the home of heat, humidity, and Harleys. In fact she’d own a Harley, but her legs are too short. DiAnn and her husband have four adult sons and are active members of Metropolitan Baptist Church.

Q & A with DiAnn:

You’ve been writing historical fiction for a long time. What interested you in the 1803 time period?

I love Texas history, and I have an appreciation for the courageous men and women who built this state. EarlyTexas is a mixture of Native American, Spanish, black, and various European descents. Each race offered us a rich cultural heritage, a heritage that we should be proud.

What is it the theme of Awaken My Heart?

The theme is courage: courage to stand up to political and social factions that vie against God and what He desires for His people.

Armando Garcia is a rebel type of character. Do you think this type of hero applauds rebellion?

Not at all. Armando had much to learn about the difference between his own desires and what God required of him. Once he realized his stand needed to embrace truth, he was on the right road.

Marianne Phillips has a streak of rebellion in her. How was it channeled?

Marianne kept much of her rebellion inside because she knew God expected her to honor her parents, and in many instances, her father’s wishes. Once she saw that she had to make a choice between obedience to her father and obedience to God, she found strength to do that which was right.

What do you want your readers to understand about Weston Phillips?

Weston Phillips had the potential to be a good and kind man. He had the intelligence to build a large ranch and the ability to accumulate wealth, but selfishness took the reins. Once the reader completes the novel, he/she will understand Phillips much better.

What is your biggest challenge in writing?

Always the characterization. I crave three dimensional characters that will experience growth. Understanding and acting upon their motivation takes time! Sometimes I simply have to “live” with them for awhile. J
